Moreover, up to 40 percent of people with bipolar disorder reported feelings of abnormal irritability, which is defined as feelings of excitability or annoyance (Deckersbach et al. 2004). However, anger and irritability can also be part of depression, and sometimes the most prominent aspect of depression, at least as experienced by the people around someone with bipolar disorder.
Retreat
Step back from a heated discussion and take a break, a time-out, or a breather, rather than jumping in and expressing the first thing that pops into your head. Learning skills to relax, such as meditation, breathing exercises,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or exercise, and scheduling personal retreats, even during your lunch break, may help you control your temper.
WHAT IS YOUR ANGER PATTERN?
Some people can tolerate more stress, frustration,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and disappointment than others. The same situations, conflicts, or events may trigger anger for you and not for someone else. There are many different ways to express anger when you feel the intensity of the emotion. By reflecting on how you express your anger, you can determine whether you need to learn new skills to respond in healthier ways.

Slow down and calm your racing thoughts and take your time to think about what’s happening before you respond. You will be more effective in resolving the conflict if you get in touch with your feelings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], listen carefully to what others are saying,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and try to brainstorm possible solutions to the issues.
Expressing Anger in a Controlled Manner
Verbalizing feelings using an assertive, reasonable tone of voice is, in the long run, typically more helpful to your efforts to achieve your life goals than outbursts or violence (though outbursts may feel better at the time!). Being assertive means that you clearly state your needs without hurting or overpowering others.
Calming Strategies
Controlling your outward behavior and your internal responses to the anger can allow you to calm yourself and let the angry feelings fade away. Relaxation or visualization techniques such as counting to ten, meditation, breathing exercises, or even exercising can help ease your physical responses and help you focus on something positive.
WHAT IS ANGER?
Anger is natural and even a necessary emotion for survival, but it can be destructive when expressed inappropriately. Like an alarm, anger tells you something is wrong with a situation. In general, what causes anger?
* Stress—when faced with health, money, work, or personal problems
* Life events—when remembering bad things that have happened to you
* Frustration—when not in control of a situation or when overwhelmed by tasks
* Fear—when feeling that a relationship or a job may not work out
* Resentment—when feeling hurt, rejected, or oppressed
* Disappointment—when expectations aren’t met
MANAGING ANGER
In managing anger, the goal is to develop and strengthen your observing self, which allows you to make choices in your own long-term best interest, like you did in module 13 on psychosis. When thinking about managing anger, there are several approaches that can assist you. Here are the three Rs of anger control: retreat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rethink, and respond (Jacobs 1994).
ANGER TRIGGERS
It is important to be aware of your feelings of anger and to identify when expressions of anger are unhealthy. Have you ever slammed your office door when you were frustrated at work? Have you ever yelled at the clerk in a store or a pharmacist on the phone when the person couldn’t help you fast enough? These ways of managing anger are not only ineffective, but may also lead to personal or legal problems. Anyone’s past life history can contribute to the way they react or overreact to situations. For instance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], people who have been ridiculed, neglected, or victimized in the past may have built up negative feelings over time based on these events. Sometimes it is not the person or the event in the present that makes you feel angry, but it’s your way of thinking—based on your past personal experiences—that creates these angry feelings. Anger has three components that can be described as psychological, biological or physiological, and cognitive (Mayo Clinic 2007):
* Psychological anger refers to your feelings, which can vary in intensity from mild frustration and disappointment to sadness to intense rage.
* Biological or physiological anger refers to the body’s responses, when your heart rate or blood pressure rises or your muscles tense.
* Cognitive anger refers to your thoughts while you’re angry, such as believing that you’re justified to be angry or thinking that no one listens to you.
PERSONAL TRIGGERS
There are triggers that automatically spark certain symptoms of mania, but they also exist for anger and irritability,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whether or not you have manic symptoms. Triggers for anger can lead to anger, and an angry response can lead to the other person’s angry response, which can itself be a new trigger and can escalate a situation quickly. Often this scenario involves circumstances where you believe you’ve been treated unfairly or your expectations have not been met.
When you live with bipolar disorder yourself, you know the experience when your mood shifts and disrupts your normal life activities. These swings may be mild or severe, but for many people, the symptoms of mania may include excessive irritation or aggressive behavior,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and depressive symptoms can include irritability, agitation, and anger. Also, during manic or depressive episodes, you may have developed negative thought patterns and beliefs that everything is bad. This habit of viewing things negatively may predispose you to becoming angry more easily than at times when you can see the world from a positive perspective.
Respond
When you’re feeling calmer, concentrate on using slower speech and a calm tone of voice that is not defensive or judgmental or insulting. Using silly humor, not sarcasm, can defuse the tension. Some people find it’s helpful to write a script and rehearse it in private in order to stick to the main concerns.
Remember to use “I” statements when describing the problem to avoid criticizing or placing blame. For instance, say, “I’m unhappy that you didn’t come home earlier,” rather than, “You should have been home earlier.” Talking to a person you can trust with your feelings, a friend or a therapist, can help you express your anger, especially when you cannot feel calm enough to talk directly to the person who angered you.
Suppressing Anger
Holding in your anger or stopping yourself from thinking about it can be a healthy reaction when you convert the energy to a positive, constructive behavior. The key is to make sure that you find a way to calm yourself or a healthy way to express your feelings that doesn’t lead to just suppressing the anger you have. It is also important to be careful not to turn the anger inward or plot schemes to retaliate. The danger is that anger turned inward can lead to sleep problems, high blood pressure, tension headaches, and increased depression.
CONSTRUCTIVE EXPRESSIONS OF ANGER
If you have been wronged, it is natural to feel angry. But how you express these feelings through words, gestures, or actions can be problematic due to the intensity of the anger emotion. It’s important to manage your reaction in a constructive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], controlled way.
There are three basic ways to handle anger: controlled expression, suppression, and calming strategies (Mayo Clinic 2007).

OTHER APPROACHES FOR ANGER MANAGEMENT
So often our bodies hold the tension that anger produces. You can convert the energy and release the tension through physical activity. Taking a walk or playing any sport (hitting a ball, shooting baskets, throwing a Frisbee) can redirect the energy in a healthy way. If you are in a location where you don’t have this opportunity, you could write your feelings in a journal, listen to music, or focus your thoughts on calmer, more positive times. This is also a good opportunity to use some of your “Zen monk” techniques (exercises 13.3 and 13.4).
It may seem the most difficult idea to accept, but forgiving the person you’re angry with and not holding a grudge against him or her for words or actions will help you to heal. This allows you to take control of the issue at hand for the long run and not have it control and consume you.

I know some people have never exercised regularly in their lives – to them it’s unthinkable, boring and torturous. Anyone who thoroughly loves exercise can’t understand how people can feel like that. They are missing out on a huge,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], free natural pleasure. Some non exercisers try to start but do too much too soon (i.e. a 10km run) instead of attempting a 15 minute walk and building on it. They end up in agony for a good week afterwards and swear they’ll never attempt exercise ever again. Many ‘non exercisers’ do become addicted to it also when they build up slowly. They realise how mad they were for not doing it earlier. They regret having never explored it in the past. When they think of their old attitude to exercise they are embarrassed and annoyed - they can’t believe they let themselves believe such rubbish “exercise is torture” for so long.

I would go mad if I couldn’t exercise. Because I work sitting at a computer for long stretches I adore ‘walk o’clock’. I get OUTSIDE! I smell fresh air! I feel the sun on my skin. I walk to the river near my house and see ducklings. For 45 minutes a day I am ‘free’ out and about just pounding the pavement, looking at nature and getting amongst it.
From a young age I’ve been addicted to exercise (in a great way) I remember reading about age eleven about a thing called a ‘runners high’. I thought ‘I’ve got to get me one of those’! I was intrigued by the body’s ability to create an amazing high so naturally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I finally got a runners high (you have to get through the building fitness stage first) about age 14,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. On the weekend me and my sister would run through the forest near our house and run along the beach,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Sometimes we’d be gone for two hours,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]! Getting home exhausted with my legs and lungs’ burning was the best feeling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

Korea is working on boosting its financial assistance for countries that need the aid. The amount of money Korea spends to help Third World nations and countries recovering from natural disasters have risen significantly over the last two years. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice reported progress Wednesday in London talks among senior diplomats of the five permanent U.N. Security Council member countries and Germany on a strategy for dealing with Iran's nuclear program. But she said more talks will be needed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], perhaps at the ministerial level.
The major powers are hoping to be able to present Iran soon with a package of incentives for ending nuclear activities the United States believes are weapons-related, and a defined program of punitive actions if it refuses.
But Secretary Rice acknowledges that a closed door meeting of the so-called P-Five Plus One grouping in London ended without an agreement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that further talks will be needed after outstanding issues are discussed in the respective capitals.
The Secretary of State discussed the results of the London meeting at a joint press appearance with International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed el Baradei,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
'We did not expect that they were going to finalize all matters, and I think they are still working on some matters," said Condoleezza Rice. However in the appearance with Rice, elBaradei said the format of talks was for the United States to decide, and that his role was as an honest broker in pursuit of a diplomatic solution to the Iran nuclear crisis.
"I believe that it's very important for Iran to take whatever measures are required for the international community to have confidence that its program is peaceful in nature,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Mohamed el Baradei. "I believe also it's very important that Iran goes back into the negotiations, to the negotiating table with the Europeans."

There are two related definitions that will give us a clear concept of "stress" and will open the door to better handling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. We'll look at the basic definition of stress and the definition of a problem first.
Let's look at it another way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Do you feel stressed by situations or problems that you have a good solution for,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? Probably not!
Take anything in your life that feels stressful to you. Apply this definition to it and see if it fits. Is it something you don't have a real solution for,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
So it is with stress. A good definition of stress would increase your understanding and your ability to handle stress.
For example, if you don't know (or have misinformation about) what kinds of food to eat to give your body strength and energy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you'll most likely create physical stress when you don't provide your body with what it needs. The body will be stressed in its effort to survive.
You might not be consciously aware of every single thing that is stressful to you at any given moment. But when you start to handle stress more effectively after you understand the definition of stress,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your awareness of stress and how to better handle it will improve.
"Stress" can be handled... Your health, happiness and life truly depend on it!
Stress can be mental or physical or a combination of both. Most material on the subject of "stress" deals with mental stress. But prolonged physical stress is the main culprit that causes illnesses and disease. And that leads to even more stress,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], both mental and physical.
Unfortunately, there's plenty of confusion and inadequate definitions of stress floating around in society. Some sources even state that there really isn't one specific definition that everyone agrees upon. Other sources vaguely define stress as some physiological reaction to environmental factors.
In other words, you could say "I don't feel like I can do anything about this problem" or "I feel stressed" and it would mean the same thing.
Similarly (but not the same), the definition of a problem is an opposing intention or force of some kind. Problems can be solved. A problem doesn't necessarily cause stress or tension.
Each one of us has our own unique set of problems and our own unique ability to solve them. So the things that may be stressful to one person may not be stressful to another. But this definition of stress allows us to understand and handle stress in an effective way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], regardless of the source.
The basic definition of "stress" is any opposing reaction or force to your own intention that causes strain or tension,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The main characteristic of a problem that becomes stressful is feeling like we can't do anything about it. Not all problems are stressful when we feel that we can do something about them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no matter how much or how little.
Neither of these concepts gives us a clear definition that we can understand and use to improve and manage the effects of stress on our mental and physical well-being,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
In any area of life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when you have a good definition of something, your understanding of that thing increases considerably. When your understanding increases, your ability to use the information increases.
So the full definition of stress is "a problem (or set of problems) that we do not feel that we can solve or do something effective to handle."
In my research and personal experience, lack of understanding about how the body works and what it requires to be healthy actually causes physical stress.

Monthly Objective: Land a part-time job netting $36,000 annually by year-end.
Goals are different from dreams in four ways. They are specific,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], actionable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], time-oriented, and realistic.
Several years ago, I found a very interesting bit of information in a book by Tom Bay - Look Within or Do Without - that was completely mediocre except for this one little gem. According to Mr. Bay, Harvard Business School did a study on the financial status of its students 10 years after graduation and found that:
First Week’s Objective: Get my first job interview.
* The 27 percent that needed financial assistance had absolutely no goal-setting processes in their lives,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
* The 60 percent that were living paycheck to paycheck had basic survival goals (such as managing to live paycheck to paycheck).
* The 10 percent that were living comfortably had general goals. They thought they knew where they were going to be in the next five years.
* The 3 percent that were financially independent had written out their goals and the steps required to reach those goals.
These laudable results happened because these people took the time to turn their dreams of wealth and health into specific, actionable, time-oriented, realistic goals.
Failing to live your dreams is not necessarily a bad thing. Lots of people are perfectly happy dreaming of one life but living another. The problem arises when the gap between fantasy and reality results in unhappiness or even depression. When this happens, it’s time to master plan a new life. And the first step is to establish goals.
And that’s just one study. Here’s one that shows the power of setting specific goals:
Chances are,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Sally and Harry and Jill and Jack will never get what they dream about. They will go on playing those mental movies for themselves or talking about them to friends and family members.
What’s your wildest, longest-held dream? How can you make it specific? How can you make it actionable? How can you put a time limit on it? How can you make it realistic? Use these four questions to create goals you can aim for… then take action. And you’ll be living your dream in a few short years.
First-Year Goal: Eliminate $36,000 worth of debt.
Seven-Year Goal: Develop a $4 million net worth in five years.
Studies are great, but personal experience is better.

Realistic: Developing a $4 million net worth in five years is probably reasonable. Developing a $4 million net worth in four months is not.
Your master plan will be broken down into seven-year and one-year goals, monthly and weekly objectives, and, finally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], daily tasks that will make it possible to achieve your medium-term objectives and long-term goals. For example:
Goals are also different than objectives - more long-term and broader in scope.
At this point,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you may be wondering: "Does it really matter whether my goals are specific? Does it make any difference if I write them down?"
First Day’s Task: Write personal letters to CEOs of my top 10 "dream job" companies.
One, for example, used a master plan to go from being a low-level employee answering the phone to a management position in a few years. He is now a major profit producer for the company. Several employees have used master plans to meet their weight-loss and physical-fitness goals, including one who lost 30 pounds through diet and vigorous exercise and overcame significant health problems.
At Early to Rise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], needless to say, we set long-term business goals and medium-term objectives. This helped us grow our revenues from zero to $25 million in seven years. And it will help us grow to the next stage of our development, above $50 million, in the next few years. Using a master plan to grow our business is gratifying - but what’s better is seeing our employees use personal master plans to improve their lives.
I spent the first 17 years of my life dreaming about success but having none. In my freshman year of college I decided to change that. I learned to learn and became an A student. Twenty-two years later, I discovered goal setting. Three years later, I was a millionaire. When I began writing ETR in 2000 - eight years ago - I learned how to prioritize my goals. That allowed me to achieve my first and most cherished dream: becoming a successful writer.
Researchers from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University asked 56 female undergraduates to do as many sit-ups as they could in 90 seconds. One group,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], told to "do their best," averaged 43 sit-ups on each day of the four-day study. The other groups, which had been given the specific goal to do consecutively more sit-ups at each session, performed significantly better, averaging 56 sit-ups on the last day of the experiment.
We all have dreams,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. We all carry movies in our minds about how life could be for us in a better world. Sally dreams of a big house with a built-in pool. Harry dreams of an eight-car garage filled with vintage Porsches. Jill fantasizes about painting pictures at the seashore. Jack wants that corner office with the view.
Time-Oriented: Developing a $4 million net worth is a goal. But developing a $4 million net worth in five years is a better goal.
Actionable: Winning the lottery is a dream. Winning a foot race is a goal.
Specific: Being rich is a dream. Developing a $4 million net worth is a goal.
You can spend your whole life dreaming. And dreams are wonderful things. By all means, dream away. But if you want to turn those dreams into reality, you need to transform them into goals.
Okay, that’s the plan. Starting today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you are going to be performing tasks every day that support weekly objectives that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in turn, support monthly objectives that, in turn, support yearly goals that, in turn, support seven-year goals. All of this will be done formally. All of it will be done in writing.
* As many as 27 percent of them needed financial assistance.
* A whopping 60 percent of them were living paycheck to paycheck.
* A mere 10 percent of them were living comfortably,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
* And only 3 percent of them were financially independent.

The main reason that a woman stays with a guy who hits her is that she still loves him. She remembers when he was different and when things were good between the two of them. He begs on bended knees for forgiveness, and tells her it will never happen again. She wants to believe him because she wants it to work out between the two of them, even when the rest of us can see that’s not gonna happen! And that he never was the guy that she thought he was early on in their relationship because he was only putting his best fake foot forward.
What could possibly make a bad-ass boy look good? Well, to begin with, sexual chemistry is paramount. We can’t really help who we’re attracted to – it’s just automatic. What we would hope is that if we find ourselves attracted to someone who may harm us, we’ll have an internal alarm that says, “no way!” And then we’ll lose interest. But some women don’t have that alarm. The bad boy is sexually appealing, perhaps because he acts more overtly sexual; he may be more flirtatious, charming or lustful. He may make the woman feel wanted physically in a way that other men don’t because he doesn’t mind crossing lines.
Talking about childhood wounds,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], many people firmly believe that women choose partners based on the kind of relationship that they had with their father, or the role modeling effect that their parents had on them. Thus, if someone was neglected,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], mistreated, criticized or worse,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she will choose a mate who treats her exactly the same way, in a futile effort to repeat this cycle and have it come out right this time. Although I would never minimize the effect of bad parenting and resulting low self-esteem, I don’t buy into such strictly Freudian notions. I’ve seen far too many families that have two girls, raised almost identically (regardless of positive or negative family dynamics) but they turn out completely different; one girl opts for a straight and narrow path with a good decent guy and the other one is drawn to the fire.
In the 90s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the explanation was battered women’s syndrome. The women had been psychologically tortured and beaten down to such an extent that they were no longer able to make good decisions. They were afraid of their abusers, and often stayed for financial reasons or to keep the family together. Some of this may still be true but it doesn’t cover all women by a long shot, and it doesn’t get into the psychological factors that drew them to the wrong men in the first place.
And remember, it’s not her fault -- blame is futile. It’s judgmental and helps no one -- but it is definitely her responsibility to get out of a toxic relationship. And if we love her, we’ll extend our hand and stand by her every step of the way.

Recently I wrote about women who were attracted to the wrong men,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I discussed one woman in particular that I knew who was drawn to a criminal. I received so many comments about that short article that I decided to write a slightly more in-depth sequel, asking the question “Why?” Why do perfectly intelligent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], often well-educated, decent women who deserve so much better fall for men who are abusive? Worse, why do they stay?
All of this is compounded if either party uses drugs or alcohol to access. Drinking and drugging impair our judgment, and predispose women to choosing men who also drink and get high – a great pair. Two people who aren’t thinking right and who’re living in a purple haze. Drugs act as great disinhibitors and if a guy has any violent tendencies, whatever control he had over them is likely to lapse when he’s drinking too much.
When a woman can’t or won’t leave an obviously dangerous situation, I think the best way to treat that is the way we do with addiction. Loudly and strongly voice opposition to the behavior, but offer warm and loving support to the person. Condemn the act, but let that friend or sister know that you’ll be there for her to help her get out of the quicksand. Have a family intervention or a group of friends get together and tell this person that she’s putting herself in harm’s way. Recommend a good counselor to help her work through her issues related to relationships in general,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all of which will be very individual.
At times, the man may not appear dangerous at all. Instead,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he might look wounded. He was abused in childhood, he was never understood, he was mistreated and victimized. She will save him, rescue him, be the one who understands when no one else did. This misguided, albeit well-intentioned, approach doesn't work either because often the victimized become the victimizers. And our sympathy stops there; we feel terrible for the little boy who was beaten by his father, but we only feel anger towards the grown-up man who repeats the cycle.
Certainly, childhood has a profound effect on our lives, but so do our early dating experiences, live-in arrangements and marriages, biology, and other innate or acquired behaviors.
What can we do when a man has already hit a woman or injured her the way Chris Brown hurt Rihanna? Those of us watching that sad drama unfold kept rooting for her to leave him and stay away. “Don’t go back,” I was shouting at the TV. “Press charges! I don’t care if he’s 19 years old. He’s probably not going to change.” But no matter how hard I yelled, she couldn’t hear me.
Some men are drawn to the chase and often prefer a woman who plays hard to get or acts like a bitch (and men are also abused. Domestic violence statistics now reflect an almost equal number of men being hit or hurt physically or emotionally by their partners, although women continue to be more likely to be seriously injured or hospitalized by male violence, largely because of their smaller physical size. Similarly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], women can attack each other. Same-sex relationships have equal amounts of domestic battering,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], much to our surprise.) Even though they may deny that this is true, some women have the same tendencies to go for that guy who appears distant or unavailable. None of us is particularly interested in a drooling puppy dog or anyone who comes across as even remotely desperate or lonely. If a man acts aloof,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or is very attentive sometimes but standoffish and distant other times, the healthy response is to think, “This guy is definitely not for me.” The unhealthy response is to start humming “I’m Going to Make You Love Me” by Diana Ross and the Supremes.
The bad boy’s behavior may start out being something minor. Perhaps he just seems nonconventional. He’s not afraid of authority. He bends the rules or makes his own, so he comes across looking like an alpha male when in fact he’s just defiant or self-centered.
This may be true of the women in your life. In my last post,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I said speak up if one of your friends or family members is involved with someone who could seriously harm them, but that’s not always effective. We can talk until we’re blue in the face but adults will do what they want to do. Women don’t leave for many reasons. Aside from obstacles with money or children or actually fearing for their physical safety (which is not extremely common, by the way. It is unlikely that your male partner will murder you like my friend Louise. She was killed by a man who had already been in jail for killing another woman so he was a criminal. And women are not killed in huge numbers by their partners. This is a misconception.)

Deputy Finance Minister Chin Dong-soo on Wednesday indicated that Korea may drop attempts to include products made in the inter-Korean Kaesong Industrial Park in North Korea in a free trade agreement with the U.S. The Kaesong issue emerged as one of the thorniest at the FTA talks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], since Washington says the North is emphatically not party to any bilateral trade pact.

Deputy Finance Minister Chin told a PBC program it would be desirable to discuss the Kaesong issue separately since raising it in FTA talks could be ��unfavorable�� to Korea. ��It is necessary to consider resolving the issue through political or other means because other issues could be affected if South Korea keeps raising the Kaesong issue when the U.S. shows no signs of backing down,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],�� he said. Korea and the U.S did not discuss details of the Kaesong issue in the second round of negotiations in Seoul in July,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Chin added. Other government officials also say Korea is considering dropping the matter and linking it to the resumption of six-party talks on North Korea��s nuclear program instead.

Eighty percent of American executives feel that corporate America has a responsibility to promote wellness, according to a study by the American Management Association. On the other hand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], less than twenty percent of U.S. employers offer lifestyle modification services, this according to the American Journal of Health Promotion.
Your action plan: Assess where you stand with management of your calories and exercise. If you are responsible for others in the workplace, assess the state of health and lifestyles of your employees. Find programs to make healthy eating and exercise a part of your life and the lives of your employees. Healthy eating and exercise programs are excellent for team building and promoting team cohesion. It is a great opportunity to build an atmosphere and culture of employees helping and supporting fellow employees. If your business is practicing the basics of healthy eating and regular exercise, fancy, cost incurring programs are unnecessary.
Now that I have established what the status quo is, let us move on to the solutions. The solutions are quite simple. Eat right, exercise regularly and think the right kind of thoughts about oneself and others. Personally, I include the relationship with the Creator in this formula.
THREE. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Another big secret to managing calories is to reduce high calorie foods and increase low calorie foods. Low calorie foods are vegetables. Fruits belong here too, because they have less sugar than processed sugary food items.
Here are seven ways to manage your calories:
FIVE. Eat low fat and low sugar. We all need fat in our diets and we need sugar. We as Americans are eating too much of both. Eating fat and sugar has become a form of ill placed stress management that results in an addiction. I do not want you to say, “An addiction is an illness. I’m sick so I can’t be blamed for my overindulgence.” My answer to this kind of thinking is “Yes” and “No.” Yes, an addiction is an illness and therefore creates more challenges to control the behavior. You are personally responsible for the pursuit of getting rid of overindulging in sugar and fat. In that sense, you will treat it likes it is not an illness.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 75% of employers’ health care costs and productivity losses have a direct causal connection to employee lifestyle choices.
ONE. Burn more than you use. Exercise and movement of the body will increase your calorie burn. However, you cannot workout all the time so regardless of activity levels, you need to manage calories all the time. If your activity levels go down, you reduce the calories. If they go up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you increase the caloric intake in a balanced way.
TWO. Eat out less. Eating out is full of extra temptations and the portion sizes are too big. They are, for the most part, "calorie bombs" packed with excess calories.
If leadership thinks it is important enough,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it will be implemented. The problem is there is a part of our culture that puts the daily lifestyle approach to true health and wellness on the back burner.
There are only two issues to be considered when it comes to management of calories. They are quality and quantity of food. The number one issue when it comes to managing weight is the quantity of food, also known as caloric intake.

SEVEN. Read the labels. Be on the look out for sugar and fat. Be on the look out for high calorie content. That's easy to identify. For example, olive oil is high calorie content even though it is considered healthy. One tablespoon of olive oil has 120 calories. If you pour it on without measuring it, you can end up with several hundred calories from olive oil alone.
The secret is to become your own calorie manager.
FOUR. Spice It Up. Spices are a great way to keep the calories low while increasing the flavor. I am a big fan of Old Bay seasoning. It is a great flavor enhancer. Ketchup and mustard will do too. One tablespoon of ketchup has 15 calories. I just had lunch of brown rice, black beans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], broccoli, cauliflower and olive oil. I used one cup of brown rice (200 cal.), 1/2 cup of black beans (100 cal.), 1 tablespoon of olive oil (120 cal.) and two cups of vegetables (60 cal.). The three food items that need careful calorie management are rice, black beans and olive oil. I use measuring cups and spoons to keep them under control.
SIX. Write it down. If you need to get your eating back under control, spend a few days writing down everything you eat and drink. Then find out how many calories you have consumed. If necessary, put on your calorie manager hat and go to work making adjustments.

Bodybuilding is the process of maximizing muscle hypertrophy through the combination of weight training, sufficient caloric intake,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and rest.
